Grand Hyatt Hotel in Hong Kong: 5-star tables

Recognised as being one of the most luxurious hotel in the world, we invite you to step through the Grand Hyatt’s doors and breathe in its elegance as you enjoy the incredible view of Victoria Harbour and marvel at the 10m-high marble columns in the hotel’s lobby. The hotel has over 500 bedrooms, 10 restaurants and the largest ballroom in the whole of Hong Kong.

Having famously welcomed international figures, heads of state and other high-society celebrities, the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong has just undergone a transformation orchestrated by the BAR Studio agency. Located in Melbourne and covering the whole of the Asia-Pacific region, the agency, which specialises in hotel design, revelled at the challenge to transform the hotel with a brief to showcase excellence, harmony and a return to its roots.

First opened in 1989 and a veritable institution of the hotel, the Grand Café also needed revamping to move with the times. The setting and history of the location were the two main inspirations behind this redesign project. The designers decided to theatricalize the café-restaurant, creating open scenes and spaces connected to form a dynamic environment. The depth of colours, ornate brilliance, noble quality materials and historic fruitful partnerships once again captured the imaginations of the designers from the famous design agency, who commissioned Pyrolave to make the table tops.

48 enamelled Volvic lava stone units, in Ivoire and Tilleul colours to portray the strong links between Hong Kong and the bamboo forests, are set around the Grand Café. A mixture of round and square Pyrolave tables lend refinement and elegance to this prestigious café-restaurant, which serves modern cuisine fused with the fragrant flavours of traditional Asian street markets.

Aux Cadrans – Paris: Fancy a coffee ?

New lease of life for this typical Parisian bistro located opposite Gare de Lyon. The Emma Roux studio conceived and designed a verdant and calm ambiance for this high-footfall premises. The brasserie interior is now a haven of floral, tropical and jungle inspired décor. The designer has added a modern twist with splashes of bright colour: Emeraude green to symbolise the garden and pink to energise the space.

The link to Nature has been carried through to the choice of materials and furniture with wicker armchairs, light oak tones and untreated wood. Table tops made from Volvic enamelled lava stone earned their place in this project due to the transparent colour and strength of this material. The search for specific colours resulted in the selection of the shade of pink sought by the designer and her desire “to bring the tables to life”.

Once the final design decision had been made, the Pyrolave workshop set about producing 27 table tops – with more than 10 manual stages to the manufacturing process carried out in the South West region in France – before edging them with brass. This finishing touch was added for aesthetic reasons as well as to strengthen the enamelled lava tops to protect them when the tables are moved about in the café.

Design: When a mountain lake becomes an iconic table

There are times when creativity knows no bounds. This is the story of an amazing encounter at the Architect@Work show in Berlin four years ago between two young designers from the DEUTSU agency in Munich and our local Pyrolave agent Alexandre Greis. The magic happened right there. They have the idea and we have the material.

The simple evocation of a landscape, in particular that of a mountain lake nestled in the Alpine foothills, combined with the depth of enamel colour, inspires an iconic decorative object. Half wood, half Volvic lava, the Bergsee1 table was born. It has a perfectly sculpted and curved fine wooden oak or walnut structure, which exudes a calmness, combined with Nordic and vintage style legs. Together these two elements fuse to create a totally unique item of furniture.

The table tops are available in two sizes and have very precise dimensions to ensure that the architects can fit them perfectly and flush within the wooden structure. The colours can be selected from our existing catalogue or can be custom-created for maximum personalisation.
