China Works, located in London, is a fascinating example of architectural rehabilitation that combines history and modernity. Formerly a building constructed in the 1800s for the famous pottery company Royal Doulton, this space has been transformed into a 2.0 coworking space, blending functionality with contemporary aesthetics.
An Innovative Project
The project was orchestrated by the agencies Frost and Bluebottle, who drew inspiration from the Victorian Gothic style of the building while integrating modern elements. One of the most remarkable aspects of this transformation is the use of Pyrolave enamelled lava for the bar, which serves as a central feature in this space. This material was chosen for its thermal resistance and non-porosity, providing an ideal surface for a dynamic and aesthetic work environment.
Design and Functionality
The design of the bar was carefully crafted to create visual continuity between horizontal and vertical surfaces. The Emerald color, used for both the countertop and vertical cladding, ensures perfect harmony throughout the space. Pyrolave’s artisans also met the technical challenge of designing ornamental shapes from blocks of lava, allowing for complex moldings while maintaining the necessary lightness for installation.
