A UNIQUE EXPERTISE

The remarkable destiny of the Pyrolave enamelled lava couldn’t begin without our men’s unique skill and expertise in extracting the stone.

EXTRACTION

The stone is primarily hand-quarried from our opencast quarries on the Nugère crater, in the heart of the Natural Park of the Auvergne Volcanos. The quarry-worker chooses where to split the rock according to the natural openings in the stone.
It takes many years experience to be able to “read” the flow and identify, delimit and cut the lava blocks. This incredible expertise is essential to extract the biggest blocks possible, which are then cut into slabs of varying thicknesses in our Mallet workshop in Volvic.

Only the expertise gained by years of experience allows the supply of our precise custom-made products ordered, ensuring a perfect fit when finish product reaches site.

WORK ON MATERIAL

The lava slabs are then taken from Volvic to our Castelsarrasin site, where the finer manufacturing process begins. The stone is cut and machined using digital technology, before being hand-finished to provide impeccable results. Once again, only the expertise gained by years of experience allows the supply of our precise custom-made products ordered, ensuring a perfect fit when finish product reaches site.

No less than 10 individual stages are involved in this enamelling process.

ENAMELLING PROCESS

The finished pieces are sometimes used un-glazed for flooring or walls, but more often our products are enamelled which gives Pyrolave its inimitable signature. No less than 10 individual stages are involved in this enamelling process, from high-pressure washing to remove any remaining impurities, to extracting finished enamelled items from the kilns. Enamelling is an art that can only be carried out by a true craftsman, which only enhances the material’s unique character.
